Why TVL Arrives and Leaves

At ICODA, we understand the unique hurdles faced by DeFi projects. Here’s how we help tackle them with tailored solutions to increase your TVL and user base.

Low TVL & Metric Stagnation
Attracting initial liquidity and breaking stagnation can be challenging. We employ proven strategies specifically designed to drive TVL growth and ensure sustainable momentum.
Poor Community Engagement
An inactive or disengaged community can hinder your success. Our Community Management strategies rebuild trust, foster loyalty, and turn passive users into active brand advocates.
Outdated or Underperforming Tokenomics
An ineffective token model limits growth. We provide cutting-edge tokenomics redesign, aligning incentives to encourage long-term holding and protocol participation.
Low Visibility in a Crowded Market
Limited search engine visibility affects organic traffic. Our SEO strategies enhance your rankings, boost visibility, and attract a high-value audience of DeFi users and founders.
Building Trust and Credibility
A negative or non-existent reputation can hinder your success. Our Public Relations (PR) strategies build trust and brand awareness in the competitive DeFi market.
Weak Social Media Presence
A strong connection with your audience is essential. Our Social Media solutions build engagement, foster loyalty, and grow brand awareness effectively across platforms like Twitter and Telegram.

Our DeFi Background

Our track record in delivering a measurable increase in TVL and user base speaks for itself.

DeFi Acquisition

The TVL Funnel: What Moves Each Stage

Four stages, four channels, four different ways the number can be wrong. Tracking is named per stage, because a DeFi funnel is the rare one where the conversion event is a public transaction.

Stage Where It Happens What Good Looks Like How This Number Gets Faked How It Is Tracked
Awareness Crypto Twitter, governance forums, audit announcements, the protocol's DeFiLlama page Mentions from accounts with no connection to the team Easily, and it barely matters. Impressions can be bought at any volume, and nobody deposits on an impression. Social listening and referral source, not impressions
Wallet Connect Discord and Telegram communities, docs pages, integration partner pages Connects from wallets that already have on-chain history Wallets created the week a campaign launches inflate this stage before any other. Wallet age and prior activity separate them. Wallet-connect events against unique visitors
First Deposit Onboarding content, rate comparisons, audit-credibility PR, education written for fiat-first buyers Deposits from wallets that were verified before they were counted Sybil farms land here as wallet count rather than capital. On RootstockCollective every attributed wallet was cross-checked against on-chain history before it entered the total: 220 verified stakers, 48.3% of the ecosystem's 455. The staking or deposit transaction itself, read on-chain. Form fills do not count.
Retained TVL Ongoing yield and governance content, integration announcements, milestone coverage TVL still standing after emissions taper This is the stage a growth number is usually quoted from, and the one where the capital is rented. A TVL figure with no retention window attached is a number about incentives. The DeFiLlama TVL history chart read against the emissions schedule, never on its own

What TVL Hides

What the Number Nets Out

DeFiLlama’s own three exclusions
  • Borrowed assets. Assets borrowed from a lending protocol are not counted toward its TVL — only the coins actually locked in the contracts are. Borrows are reported as a separate metric.
  • Liquid staking. Liquid staking protocols are tracked, and not counted toward chain TVL by default, so native staking does not swamp the DeFi figure.
  • Receipt and LP tokens deposited onward. When a receipt token from one protocol is deposited into a second, the second is flagged as double-counted, and the Doublecount toggle decides whether it is summed.
  • Which is why a protocol’s own TVL and the chain total it sits inside will not add up, and why comparing two protocols means checking what each one’s adapter counts.

What the Number Still Carries

No toggle on the site removes these
  • Deposits the emissions bought. Liquidity mining raises TVL while it runs and gives it back when rewards taper. The chart to read is TVL history against the emissions schedule.
  • Price. TVL is a dollar figure over a token balance, so a move in the token’s own price changes TVL without a single deposit or withdrawal.
  • Wallet count standing in for capital. A staker total is only as good as the verification behind it — on RootstockCollective every attributed wallet was cross-checked against on-chain history before it was counted, which is what makes 220 stakers mean 48.3% of ecosystem growth rather than a dashboard number.
  • Concentration. A headline TVL says nothing about how many wallets it came from, and a figure carried by a handful of depositors moves when one of them leaves.

From Protocol Audit to Retained TVL

Read the Curve Against the Emissions
1
We take the baseline off your DeFiLlama page and your own contracts, then line the TVL history up against the emissions schedule. The question the audit answers is which of the existing deposits the incentives are paying for.
Name the Depositor You Are Short Of
2
A BTC-native staker, a fiat-first buyer and a yield-rotating LP are three different acquisitions with three different objections. On one algorithmic-stablecoin protocol the gap was fiat-first: 16% APY read as a pyramid to traditional investors until the mechanics were rewritten in their language, and monthly fiat purchase volume went from zero to $340,000 in six months at 7× return on spend.
Put the Content Where That Depositor Already Reads
3
Governance forums, Discord servers picked on the on-chain activity of their members rather than their headcount, docs pages, and the aggregator listing itself. Paid reach on X is the cheapest of these when a crypto account clears review — one cross-chain DeFi protocol reached 3,775,000 impressions and coverage of more than five million users on X.
Attribute Per Source Before You Count
4
A unique link per partner community, and every wallet cross-checked against on-chain history before it enters the total. This is slow, which is why most campaigns skip it and report the larger number. It is also what lets an underperforming channel be dropped mid-campaign instead of at the final report.
Report the Transaction, Not the Impression
5
The reported number is the staking or deposit transaction, read on-chain, against a named baseline. On RootstockCollective the baseline was 1,095 STRIF holders and the result was 1,550 — 455 new stakers, 220 of them attributed to the campaign, all of it checkable on a block explorer rather than in a dashboard.

Frequently Asked Questions about DeFi Marketing

Can’t find what you’re looking for? Check out our common questions, please contact us at post@icoda.io or telegram.

DeFi marketing is a specialized field focused on promoting decentralized finance protocols and applications. It involves more than just advertising; it’s about building trust, educating a highly technical audience, fostering a strong community on platforms like Discord and Telegram, and driving key metrics like TVL and user adoption. Effective DeFi marketing requires a deep understanding of tokenomics, blockchain technology, and the unique motivations of DeFi users.

A DeFi strategy is a comprehensive plan for a protocol’s growth. It’s not just a marketing plan; it integrates product development, tokenomics, community building, and go-to-market actions. A strong DeFi strategy defines the target audience (e.g., yield farmers, institutional clients), sets clear goals (e.g., “increase TVL to $50M”), and outlines the specific steps to achieve them, from designing incentive programs to executing PR campaigns.

General crypto marketing often focuses on hype and token price for a broad audience. DeFi marketing is more about building a sustainable ecosystem for a niche, knowledgeable user base. It requires educating users about a protocol’s utility, building deep trust to secure their assets, fostering an engaged community, and focusing on fundamental metrics like TVL, transaction volume, and user retention, rather than just short-term price action.

A specialized DeFi marketing agency acts as a growth partner for protocols. It develops and executes strategies for user acquisition, PR, and content that resonates with DeFi users. A top DeFi agency like ICODA understands tokenomics, community management, and the importance of metrics like TVL, helping founders to build trust and achieve sustainable growth.

Growing TVL for a new protocol requires a multi-faceted approach. It starts with building trust through security audits and transparent communication. Then, initial liquidity can be attracted via targeted incentive programs (yield farming) and a fair launch. A key part of the strategy is effective DeFi marketing to reach early adopters and build a strong community that will sustain long-term growth.

Effective strategies include targeted airdrops (to real users, not just bots), educational content (tutorials, guides), strategic partnerships with other protocols, an active presence on Crypto Twitter and Reddit, and PR campaigns to build credibility. For broader reach, simplifying the onboarding process for non-crypto natives is also crucial.

Look for an agency with a proven track record and specific DeFi case studies. A trustworthy agency will focus on business metrics (like TVL), not just vanity metrics (like impressions). They should understand the technical nuances of your project and be transparent about their strategies and reporting. Ask them how they would grow your TVL, and their answer will reveal their level of expertise.
