Introduction
Lido is the largest liquid staking protocol in DeFi. It controls more staked ETH than any competitor. By most on-chain metrics, it’s a giant. But ask an AI search tool to recommend DeFi platforms for passive income, and Lido barely appears. Its Reddit Presence Score — a composite of how broadly, positively, and frequently it’s discussed across Reddit — is 3.2 out of 10. Almost invisible.
Now consider MetaMask, which scored 7.8. When anyone asks AI “what’s the best DeFi wallet,” MetaMask isn’t just mentioned — it is the answer. Every time. The same way Reddit users have spent years saying “just use MetaMask,” AI has absorbed that consensus and repeats it.
This prompted a question we spent six weeks investigating:
Does what people say about your brand on Reddit determine whether AI recommends you?
We scored 22 brands across crypto and fintech on Reddit presence, tested their visibility across 25 AI search queries, and measured the gap. The correlation we found (r ≈ 0.72) is strong enough to matter and nuanced enough to be useful.
Why This Matters for Crypto and Fintech Brands Right Now
The way people discover financial products is shifting. Instead of Googling “best crypto exchange” and scanning ten blue links, a growing share of users ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude — and act on the first answer they get. There’s no page two. There are no alternative results to click through. If AI doesn’t recommend your brand, for a growing segment of potential customers, you functionally don’t exist.
Reddit sits at the center of this shift. Google’s multi-year licensing deal with Reddit, widely reported since 2024, formalized what was already happening: Reddit discussions are high-signal training data for AI models. When thousands of real users debate which exchange is safest, which wallet is easiest, or which neobank has the lowest fees, that collective judgment feeds directly into how AI answers the same questions later.
The business implications are concrete. Foundation Labs found that a single Reddit thread titled “Is Robinhood safe?” receives 11,000 monthly visits, worth an estimated $18,600 in equivalent paid traffic — and Robinhood couldn’t control any of it until they launched an official subreddit in late 2024. Multiply this across every recommendation query in your category, and the stakes become clear: Reddit shapes AI, and AI shapes your pipeline. The brands that Reddit users recommend are the brands AI recommends. And the brands Reddit ignores are increasingly invisible to the fastest-growing discovery channel in financial services.
Methodology: How We Measured Reddit Presence and AI Visibility
The study ran in four phases. We selected 22 brands spanning crypto exchanges (Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, OKX, Gemini, Crypto.com), wallets (MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Ledger, Trezor), DeFi protocols (Uniswap, Aave, Lido), neobanks (Revolut, N26, Wise, SoFi, Chime), investment platforms (Robinhood, eToro), and infrastructure (MoonPay, Mercury) — deliberately mixing Reddit-dominant brands with Reddit-invisible ones.
Each brand received a Reddit Presence Score (RPS, 1–10) averaging five sub-scores: Reach (breadth of discussion across Reddit), Sentiment (positive vs negative tone), Structure (% of content in AI-friendly formats like Q&A and comparisons), Brand Engagement (official participation quality), and Recommendation Signal (how often users organically recommend the brand).
We then ran 25 test queries through AI-powered web search, scoring each brand’s AI Visibility Score (AIVS, 1–10) across Mention Frequency, Position, Context, and Info Depth.

The Scoreboard: Full Rankings

The headline number: an estimated correlation of r ≈ 0.72 between Reddit Presence Score and AI Visibility Score. That’s a strong positive relationship — strong enough to confirm that Reddit presence meaningfully predicts AI visibility, and loose enough to reveal which other factors matter.
What jumps out immediately: every brand with a Reddit Presence Score above 6.5 also achieved an AI Visibility Score above 6.5 — a 100% hit rate. At the low end, 67% of brands with RPS below 4.0 also scored below 5.0 in AI visibility. The floor holds, but the ceiling is where it gets interesting: brands like Coinbase, Wise, and Ledger significantly overperform their Reddit scores, suggesting other factors — editorial media, SEO, official documentation — can amplify Reddit’s signal.

| Brand | Category | RPS | AIVS | Delta | Classification |

| Mercury | Banking | 2.5 | 3.8 | +1.3 | 🔺 Niche |
| MoonPay | Infrastructure | 2.0 | 0.5 | -1.5 | 🔻 Invisible |
12 brands (55%) overperformed their Reddit score in AI. 8 (36%) mirrored it. Only 2 (9%) underperformed — both with specific headwinds (OKX’s AML guilty plea, MoonPay’s B2B invisibility). The average delta was +0.9, meaning brands are generally more visible in AI than their Reddit presence alone would predict — editorial media, SEO, and official documentation provide a boost on top of the Reddit foundation.
The Recommendation Signal Is the Strongest Predictor of AI Visibility
Of the five sub-parameters in our Reddit Presence Score, one stands well above the rest: Recommendation Signal — how often real users on Reddit organically say something equivalent to “just use [brand].” Its estimated correlation with AI visibility (r ≈ 0.80) is stronger than Reach (0.73), Structure (0.70), Sentiment (0.55), or Brand Engagement (0.35).

The logic is straightforward. When a user posts “I’m new to crypto, what exchange should I use?” and dozens of Redditors reply “Coinbase” or “Kraken,” that pattern creates a consensus signal. It propagates into comparison articles, NerdWallet rankings, and YouTube reviews. AI models — whether trained on that data or retrieving it in real-time — absorb the consensus and reproduce it. The recommendation thread becomes the AI answer.
Every brand scoring 7+ on Recommendation Signal achieved an AI Visibility Score of 6.3 or higher. Every brand scoring 4 or below stayed under 5.0 — with one exception (Robinhood, lifted by sheer volume).
The implication for marketers is precise: the question isn’t “are people talking about us on Reddit?” It’s “are people recommending us, and in what context?” A subreddit with 100,000 members complaining about your customer support contributes less to AI visibility than a handful of genuine advocates saying “I use this and it works” in r/personalfinance or r/cryptocurrency.
| RPS Sub-Parameter | Est. Correlation with AIVS | Takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| Recommendation Signal | r ≈ 0.80 | Reddit recommends → AI recommends |
| Reach | r ≈ 0.73 | Discussion volume creates data surface for AI |
| Structure | r ≈ 0.70 | Q&A and comparison formats feed AI extraction |
| Sentiment | r ≈ 0.55 | Matters less than expected — brands survive bad sentiment |
| Brand Engagement | r ≈ 0.35 | Official presence has little direct AI impact |
The Beginner Premium: Why “Best for Beginners” Wins AI
Of the 25 queries we tested, 18 (72%) are the type a beginner would ask — “best exchange for beginners,” “safest way to buy Bitcoin,” “how to store crypto safely.” This isn’t a quirk of our query selection; it reflects the reality that AI search is disproportionately used by people who are new to a subject and looking for a trusted starting point.
This creates a structural advantage for brands positioned as the safe first choice. Coinbase is the clearest example: it overperforms its Reddit Presence Score by 1.7 points (RPS 6.8 → AIVS 8.5), the largest positive delta among exchanges. Its Reddit reputation as “the beginner’s exchange” maps perfectly onto the dominant query intent. When someone asks AI where to start, Coinbase is the answer — not because it’s the cheapest, the most feature-rich, or even the most liked on Reddit, but because it’s what people recommend to newcomers.
The flipside is real: brands perceived as advanced or niche — OKX, Lido, Mercury — are penalized not for product quality but for positioning mismatch. If your brand story is “we’re the platform for serious traders,” AI might never surface you, because the people asking AI aren’t serious traders yet. They’re beginners looking for a safe default.
Three Stories the Data Tells
The Invisible Giant: Lido
Lido controls more staked ETH than any other protocol. By total value locked — the DeFi equivalent of assets under management — it’s dominant. Its Reddit Presence Score is 3.2 out of 10. The subreddit has roughly 5,000 members. In general “best DeFi platform” queries, Lido barely registers; it only appears in staking-specific questions.
Yet its AI Visibility Score reached 5.5 — overperforming its Reddit presence by 2.3 points, one of the largest positive deltas in our dataset. The explanation: DeFi analytics platforms like DefiLlama, protocol documentation, and on-chain data provide an alternative signal that AI can draw from. Reddit isn’t Lido’s only path to AI visibility — but it’s the path it’s leaving almost entirely untapped.
A Lido score of 5.5 sounds acceptable until you realize that Aave (a smaller protocol by TVL) scores 7.0, largely because it has stronger Reddit-driven recommendation content. Lido’s market dominance buys it a floor. Reddit activity could buy it a ceiling. For any technically dominant protocol with weak Reddit presence, this gap represents a concrete, addressable opportunity.
The Default Answer: MetaMask
MetaMask scored the highest Reddit Presence Score in our dataset (7.8), driven largely by a near-perfect Recommendation Signal (9/10). On Reddit, “just use MetaMask” has become the standard response to any question about DeFi wallets — so universal it functions less as a recommendation and more as an axiom. AI has absorbed this completely. In every wallet-related query we tested, MetaMask was the dominant or sole recommendation.
This illustrates what we call the “default answer effect”: once a brand becomes Reddit’s reflexive recommendation, that consensus feeds into media articles, comparison sites, and AI training data, creating a self-reinforcing loop that is extremely difficult to break. MetaMask’s AI Visibility Score (8.0) almost perfectly mirrors its RPS (7.8) — the tightest alignment in our study.
For challengers like Trust Wallet (AIVS 4.3), the implication is sobering: displacing a default answer requires not just a better product, but a different category. Phantom succeeded by owning “wallet for Solana” rather than challenging MetaMask on Ethereum. The lesson is strategic: don’t attack the default head-on. Find the sub-category where you can become the default.
The Quiet Winner: Wise
Wise has no massive subreddit, no Reddit meme culture, no official community management. Its estimated Reddit Presence Score is around 5.5. Yet it achieved the second-highest AI Visibility Score in the entire study: 8.3. The delta of +2.8 is the largest overperformance in our dataset.
How? Wise dominates editorial coverage for international transfers and freelancer finance. NerdWallet, Forbes, and specialist comparison sites consistently rank it first. Its product positioning — “the cheapest way to send money abroad” — is precise, verifiable, and perfectly structured for AI extraction. When an AI tool answers “how to send money abroad cheaply,” Wise’s dominance in editorial content makes it the definitive answer.
Wise proves that Reddit is the single largest factor in AI visibility, but it’s not the only one. A brand with strong editorial SEO and precise category positioning can punch well above its Reddit weight. For fintech brands in particular, editorial media provides a parallel path to AI visibility that barely exists in crypto — where Reddit is a more dominant information source.
What Doesn’t Matter (As Much As You Think)
🚫 Subreddit size alone doesn’t predict AI visibility. PayPal has ~80,000 subreddit members — nearly all of them complaining. Cash App has 120,000. Neither translates to strong AI recommendation because the content is overwhelmingly negative support tickets, not the kind of organic advocacy AI models extract as a signal. A large, angry subreddit may actually be worse than a small, enthusiastic one.
🚫 Your brand’s own Reddit engagement is the weakest predictor. Brand Engagement — official AMAs, support team responses, community events — showed the weakest correlation (r ≈ 0.35) with AI visibility of any sub-parameter. Coinbase’s formulaic support bot doesn’t prevent it from scoring AIVS 8.5. MetaMask’s minimal official presence doesn’t prevent AIVS 8.0. What the community says about you matters far more for AI than what you say about yourself.
🚫 Negative sentiment doesn’t kill you — if you’re still being recommended. Coinbase and Robinhood both score 4/10 on Reddit sentiment. Their branded subreddits are complaint zones. But in external subreddits — r/cryptocurrency, r/personalfinance, r/investing — both are regularly recommended, with caveats. AI models appear to distinguish between “people complain about this” and “people still recommend this.” The first matters less than the second.
Coinbase: Reddit sentiment 4/10. AI Visibility Score: 8.5. Brands can survive bad reviews — they can’t survive being unrecommended.
However, extreme polarization does create a ceiling. Robinhood has the highest Reach score in our dataset (10/10) but only achieves AIVS 7.0 — its GameStop backlash creates persistent caveats in AI answers that suppress its recommendation strength. Polarization doesn’t kill you, but it caps your upside.
The Crypto-Fintech Divide
The correlation between Reddit presence and AI visibility is noticeably tighter for crypto brands (r ≈ 0.78) than for fintech brands (r ≈ 0.62). The reason is structural: crypto’s primary discussion venues are Reddit-native. Subreddits like r/cryptocurrency (7M+ members), r/ethereum, and r/defi are where the category’s consensus forms. Relatively fewer authoritative mainstream media outlets cover crypto with the depth they cover traditional fintech.
Fintech brands have more escape routes from Reddit’s gravity. Wise’s editorial dominance, Chime’s mainstream press coverage, Gemini’s financial media presence — these create alternative paths to AI visibility that barely exist for crypto brands. For a crypto exchange or wallet, Reddit may account for 40–50% of the AI visibility equation. For a neobank, it’s closer to 25–35%, with editorial and SEO content picking up the rest.
| Metric | Crypto (14 brands) | Fintech (8 brands) |
|---|---|---|
| Average RPS | 5.6 | 4.8 |
| Average AIVS | 6.3 | 5.8 |
| RPS → AIVS correlation | r ≈ 0.78 | r ≈ 0.62 |
| % brands overperforming Reddit in AI | 50% | 63% |
The practical takeaway: Reddit investment yields higher marginal returns for crypto brands than for fintech brands. A crypto company debating where to allocate community resources should weight Reddit heavily. A fintech company should invest in Reddit and editorial coverage in parallel — one without the other leaves visibility on the table.
Reddit’s Influence on AI Is Indirect, Not Direct
One surprising finding: Reddit threads appeared directly in AI search results for only 1–2 of our 25 queries. Yet the brand ordering in AI answers closely mirrors Reddit’s recommendation patterns.
This suggests Reddit’s impact operates through a chain: Reddit discussions shape the consensus narrative around brands, that narrative is absorbed into media articles and comparison sites, and AI outputs reflect the consensus. Reddit is an upstream signal — it influences what gets written about brands elsewhere, which then feeds AI. Its influence is more fundamental than SEO-style ranking, and therefore slower to change but more durable once established.
The Playbook: Five Steps for Reddit-to-AI Visibility
1. Win the recommendation threads.
Identify the 5–10 recurring “best [category]” threads in your vertical and ensure your brand earns organic mentions in them. This is product work, not marketing work — no amount of Reddit activity compensates for a product people don’t genuinely recommend. MetaMask and Coinbase dominate AI because real users recommend them unprompted.
2. Embrace comparison content.
Being compared to the category leader is a visibility mechanism, not a threat. Gemini appears in AI answers primarily because “Coinbase vs Gemini” is a common query. Trezor gains visibility from “Ledger vs Trezor” threads. If nobody is comparing you to the leader, you’re not in the consideration set. Being the “loser” of a comparison is better than being absent from it.
3. Structure content for AI extraction.
When engaging on Reddit or creating content, be specific and factual: fees, features, supported assets, concrete use cases. “Kraken charges 0.26% maker fees and supports 400+ assets” is AI-extractable. “We’re passionate about building the future of finance” is not. AI models need data points, not slogans.
4. Prioritize external subreddits over your branded one.
Your r/brandname subreddit matters for customer support. But for AI visibility, your presence in r/cryptocurrency, r/personalfinance, or r/digitalnomad — where recommendation threads happen — is worth far more. Coinbase’s branded subreddit is a complaint forum; its reputation in r/cryptocurrency is what drives its AIVS of 8.5.
5. Play the long game.
Our data suggests sentiment shifts on Reddit take 12–18 months to fully propagate into AI answers. Trezor’s sentiment boost from Ledger’s 2023 Recover controversy still hasn’t fully translated into higher AI visibility two years later. Gemini’s Earn scandal from 2022–2023 still appears as a negative in AI answers despite being largely resolved. This is a quarterly strategy, not a campaign tactic.
Common Pitfalls
| Pitfall | Why It Fails | Do This Instead |
|---|---|---|
| Astroturfing | Reddit communities detect and punish fake advocacy; backlash worsens AI signal | Earn genuine recommendations through product quality |
| Obsessing over subreddit size | Size ≠ positive signal (PayPal: 80K members, mostly complaints) | Focus on recommendation mentions in external subs |
| Corporate tone on Reddit | Marketing-speak gets downvoted and ignored | Be human, direct, specific. Name real numbers. |
| Running short-term campaigns | AI models have 12–18 month lag in absorbing sentiment shifts | Build sustained presence over quarters, not weeks |
| Over-investing in AMAs | Brand Engagement is the weakest predictor (r ≈ 0.35) | Invest in being useful in recurring recommendation threads |
Realistic Timeline
Building Reddit-driven AI visibility is a 12–24 month process that moves through four phases — from identifying key recommendation threads to establishing your brand as a default answer in AI search results.
| Phase | Timeframe | Expected Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | Months 1–3 | Identify key threads, begin monitoring, establish presence in external subs |
| Building | Months 4–9 | Consistent helpful presence, growing organic mentions, early comparison content |
| Momentum | Months 10–18 | Reddit consensus begins shifting, early AI visibility improvements detectable |
| Maturity | Months 18–24+ | Established “default answer” or “strong alternative” positioning in AI |
What This Study Can and Cannot Prove
This is a correlation study with 22 brands and 25 queries — directionally strong, but not a controlled experiment. We can show that Reddit presence and AI visibility move together (r ≈ 0.72). We cannot prove Reddit causes higher AI visibility; both may be driven by underlying brand strength. Our data is a point-in-time snapshot from early 2026, tested via a single AI search method. Results may differ across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude.
We address confounding variables — brand size, marketing spend, media coverage — but cannot fully isolate Reddit’s contribution. We estimate it at 35–45% of the AI visibility equation, with editorial media (25–30%), SEO content (15–20%), and other factors making up the rest. The findings should be treated as strong hypotheses for further validation, not as proven causal relationships.
The Bottom Line
If Reddit users organically recommend your brand, AI will too — and if they don’t, no amount of paid media will fill the gap at the moment a potential customer asks an AI tool what to use.
The brands that understood this early — Coinbase for exchanges, MetaMask for wallets, Wise for transfers — now hold structural advantages that will take competitors 18 months or more to erode. The brands that understand it now have a window. The brands that wait may find that by the time they invest in Reddit presence, the AI consensus has already calcified around someone else.
Yes. Our study found a strong positive correlation (r ≈ 0.72) between a brand’s Reddit Presence Score and its AI Visibility Score across 22 crypto and fintech brands. Reddit shapes the consensus narrative that AI models absorb — not by appearing directly in results, but by influencing the media, comparison sites, and training data that AI draws from.
The Recommendation Signal — how often users organically say “just use [brand]” in relevant threads — is the single strongest predictor (r ≈ 0.80), outperforming subreddit size, sentiment, and official brand engagement on Reddit.
Yes. Coinbase scores just 4/10 on Reddit sentiment yet achieves the highest AI Visibility Score (8.5) in our dataset. AI models weight whether people recommend a brand over whether people like it — negative reviews don’t kill visibility, but being unrecommended does.
Expect 12–18 months before Reddit sentiment shifts meaningfully propagate into AI-generated answers. Building a consistent presence in external recommendation threads (r/cryptocurrency, r/personalfinance) across 3–6 months lays the foundation, with measurable AI visibility improvements typically appearing after month 10.
Reddit has a stronger influence on AI visibility for crypto brands (r ≈ 0.78) than for fintech brands (r ≈ 0.62). Crypto relies more heavily on Reddit as a primary discussion venue, while fintech brands can partially compensate through editorial media coverage on platforms like NerdWallet and Forbes.
Start by running 5–10 category queries (“best crypto exchange,” “best neobank for freelancers”) through AI tools monthly and tracking whether your brand appears, in what position, and with what context. ICODA’s AI visibility research team helps crypto and fintech brands benchmark their current AI search performance and build data-driven strategies to improve Reddit-to-AI recommendation signals.
